September 2006 Upd The Exile Visits Pt. 2 (09/9/06)

                Konnichiwa!
Known to die-hard fans by his old-school gamer tag, "Prefix Exile", the always enigmatic leader of the SoftWorks pays his first visit to the Insider! (Part Two of Three)

Insider: Tough interview! What can you tell us about “Intrepid”?

Prefix: As WildCard probably mentioned, Intrepid is the code name for the next game coming from the Works. It will be powered by VF-2. As you know it is not a sequel project but an entirely new project. Here is what WildCard could not tell you… the “Intrepid” Project will be our first release on a new platform for the Works.

Insider: Not Palm OS?

Prefix: “Intrepid” will be our first title on the big screen. We will be releasing first on the desktop and then we will be moving to mobile devices. We will be doing something special for the Palm.

Insider: That is big! How is designing for desktop changed things?

Prefix: The first thing that most designers assume is that moving to the big screen means that because you have the ability to do lavish eye and ear candy that your focus SHOULD be making on graphics and sound. As the fans know, at the Works we are very big on play and how gamers play. More importantly from a design issue, how we play is little different on a big screen game. So we had to think about an idea for the big screen.

Insider: Where did the idea for “Intrepid” come from?

Prefix: After finishing up Circuit Breaker there were a lot of ideas that were being kicked around. During the snowy winter of 2002 there was the briefest of a thumbnail concept I had for a game and about a dozen hand drawn sketches. At the time there were two other games in design at The Works and we were in the middle of the internal war over whether to do a Circuit Breaker sequel or to simply port it. We were starting to do some experiments with developing for the desktop, so in 2004, I put the idea on paper started thinking about what would it be like to take the concept and promote it to the “big screen”.

Insider: When can we expect some news and screen shots?

Prefix: As you know T., we get a lot of fan mail - We want to keep fans in the loop -- We will be putting up a project page for "Intrepid" soon and as soon as other information is ready for release you will get it first.

That's it for this update game fans! More coming soon. Keep the fan mail coming!
Insider: As game fans know we are an extremely small team with a fan supported volunteer staff. Thanks for taking time out from running the Egsa SoftWorks to talk the Egsa Insider!
Prefix: The fans are everything!

Insider: Probably the single biggest fan question we receive is "Where did you go for the last five years?"
Prefix: As any indie developer will say, game development is a long journey. After Circuit Breaker we knew that the green screen Palm OS 3.x era was ending and the Palm OS 3.x and 4.x hardware was being phased out of production. There were also a lot of fans that wanted to see us on other handhelds such as Pocket PC and even on the big screen. There was a lot of reflection about which path to take. So after a brief absence, we have returned.
Insider: There have been not so secret rumors that there was a huge debate about a Circuit Breaker follow up --What can you tell us?
Prefix: We have a very strong policy on creativity and sequels at SoftWorks-- Basically, my feeling is that the state of gaming is what it is because of the reliance on far too many sequels and huge Hollywood style budgets that almost mandate a sequel to pay off the cost of making a game. There was some pretty intense debate about doing or not doing a follow up.
WildCard: (Laughs) That information is classified. I'll leave that one for Prefix to answer.

Insider: How about an exclusive -- What can you let us know about upcoming projects from Egsa SoftWorks?
WildCard: (Laughing) I can certainly tell you something about the next project that will ship from the Works - here is your exclusive for the site - it is code named "Intrepid" (This is an internal name not the project title which we will reveal shortly), it will be powered by our VF-2 engine and will ship in late summer '06. It will not be a sequel. It will be...

June 2006 Upd - WildCard Visit Part I!!! (06/18/06)

                Konnichiwa!
Known to die-hard fans by his tag, "WildCard", D. "WildCard" Tripplett's longtime work behind the scenes at Egsa SoftWorks makes him a legend. Now, the one and only WildCard makes his first appearance in the Egsa Insider! (Part One of Two)

Insider: What was your first project with Egsa SoftWorks?
WildCard: I've worked on a number of projects at "the Works". Probably the very first product I had a hand in was a project started way way back (designation: CX-101) along with Kris Cain and Duane "NemoComa" Taylor and of course, Prefix. It (CX-101) was a hand drawn, hand animated game that was started back when Windows 95 was really starting to catch on so it was designed for DOS.

Insider: What happened to that game?
WildCard: Well we were working with a semi-hacked 256-color VGA mode on 33 Mhz 486s --at the time and there were all type of compatibility issues with higher resolutions back then. The main problem with the title was that we simply did not have the horsepower at that time to really make the game we wanted to --so rather than release it, it was transferred to S3.

Insider: Okay, for the non Egsa die-hards, what is S3?
WildCard: S3 is short for Section Three. Section Three is a cold storage area at "the Works" where ideas and prototypes are put away.

Insider: Sounds as if it's in the basement level of Gotham City's Wayne Tower and guarded by Lucius Fox...
WildCard: (Laughing) Only a LOT smaller and we have better stuff than Wayne Enterprises! Seriously, as the fans know, we are very small indie -- we are nowhere near the size or scale of a Wayne Enterprises.

That's it for this update game fans! We'll have part II of our interview during our Tuesday update!
